Soviet heavy line to the IS-7: tier-by-tier grind guide

Written from the tech tree as known to the author in mid-2026; research links, module names and costs change with updates, so check the in-game tree before spending experience.

The line that ends in the IS-7 is one of the most forgiving heavy grinds in World of Tanks: every tank from tier V up has usable armour and a gun that hits hard, and each one teaches a habit the next one needs. The price is consistent too: poor accuracy, long aim times and little gun depression all the way up.

The path at a glance

Tiers I to IV pass in a handful of battles and are not heavies at all; the KV-1 is researched from the tier IV medium T-28. The real line starts at tier V.

Tier Tank What it teaches Research first Free XP?
I-IV MS-1 up to the T-28 Basic controls, spotting, not driving into the open Whatever leads on; do not elite these No, they go quickly
V KV-1 Angling a boxy hull, holding a corner The 85 mm gun for steady penetration; the 122 mm howitzer is a fun alternative No
VI KV-85 Choosing a gun to match your style: fast 100 mm or heavy 122 mm The 122 mm gun, because it carries over to the IS; then tracks and engine Only if stock play wears you out
VII IS Trading one big shot and hiding for the reload The top 122 mm gun (D-25T), then engine A little, to skip the weaker guns
VIII IS-3 The pike nose, sidescraping, hull-down with a strong turret Tracks if needed for weight, turret, then the top gun (BL-9) Yes, this is the first hard stock grind
IX T-10 Speed for a heavy, flexing to another flank, playing like a heavy medium The top gun (M62-T2) before anything else, then turret and engine Yes, the stock gun struggles at tier IX
X IS-7 Everything above, with the best turret of the line Nothing; it comes fully equipped Not applicable

Tier notes

KV-1 to IS: learning the trade

The KV-1 meets many guns that cannot hurt it when it is angled, which makes it the best classroom for armour use in the game. The KV-85 is thinner for its tier and plays more like a support heavy, so use it to practise shooting from the second line. The IS returns to the front with the gun that defines the line: large alpha damage, slow reload, weak accuracy. Learn here to fire, pull back fully, and only come out again when loaded.

IS-3: the real test

The IS-3 is where the IS-7 playstyle begins. The pike nose must face the enemy straight on, the turret is strong but the roof is thin against large calibres, and the lower plate must always be hidden. The stock configuration lacks penetration against higher tiers, which is why this is the best place in the line to spend free experience.

T-10: a different rhythm

The T-10 is quicker and more flexible than the IS-3, with a much more comfortable top gun. Its hull is less trustworthy, so it plays as a heavy that moves like a medium: take early positions, support, and relocate. That mobility habit is exactly what separates good IS-7 players from average ones.

Where the line branches

You do not have to end at the IS-7. The same tree leads to other tier X heavies:

  • IS-4: from the KV-1 through the KV-2 or T-150, KV-3, KV-4 and ST-I. Slower, with thicker all-round armour.
  • ST-II: the double-barrelled branch (IS-2-II, IS-3-II) that splits off at the KV-3.
  • Object 705A: the rear-turret branch (IS-M, Object 705) that splits off at the IS.
  • Object 277: through the Object 257, researched from the IS-3. Faster, with a more comfortable gun and weaker turret than the IS-7.

If you are unsure, play to the IS-3 first: it opens both the IS-7 and the Object 277 routes, and it is worth keeping as a tier VIII credit earner for the line.

Credits

  • The IS-7 itself costs around six million credits, and tier IX and X equipment adds a lot on top. Start saving at tier VIII.
  • Do not buy full equipment for tanks you will sell in fifty battles. A Gun Rammer and a Vertical Stabilizer can be demounted and moved up the line; check the demounting cost first.
  • Wait for tech-tree discounts on the expensive purchases at tiers IX and X when one is announced.
  • Use blueprints on tiers VIII to X, where the experience cost is highest, not on the cheap lower tiers.
  • Keep the IS-3 or a premium Soviet heavy for earning credits; tier X rarely pays for itself without a premium account.

Crew

  • Keep one crew and retrain it at every tier instead of recruiting new tankers. Start it on the KV-1.
  • Crew layouts change along the way: the KV-1 has a radio operator who is not needed later, and the IS-7 seats a second loader. Look at the next tank’s crew list before retraining so you know who stays in the barracks and who must be recruited.
  • A premium Soviet heavy accepts the same crew without retraining and is the fastest way to train it.
  • Skill order during the grind: Repairs for everyone first, then Brothers in Arms once you can reset, then Snap Shot for the gunner and Smooth Ride for the driver to ease the gun handling.

Checklist before you buy the IS-7

  1. Credits for the tank, equipment and ammunition are saved.
  2. The crew has two full skills or more and a second loader is ready.
  3. You can reverse sidescrape and keep the pike nose straight without thinking.
  4. You have a Gun Rammer and a Vertical Stabilizer to move across.
